Understanding the overlap between trauma, abuse and neurodivergence - including ADHD, autism, emotional overwhelm, masking, burnout and dysregulation

Understanding The Overlap

Why Trauma & Neurodivergence Can Become Deeply Linked

Neurodivergent people may experience trauma, stress and emotionally harmful relationships differently. Difficulties with emotional regulation, rejection sensitivity, communication, sensory overwhelm, people-pleasing, impulsivity or struggling with boundaries can sometimes make people more vulnerable to manipulation, criticism or unhealthy relationship dynamics. Over time, constant stress, masking or living in survival mode can lead to burnout, shutdown, anxiety, emotional exhaustion and difficulty managing everyday life. Many people spend years believing they are "too sensitive," "lazy," "dramatic" or " bad at coping" without realising how deeply trauma and neurodivergence can overlap and affect the nervous system

Trauma Responses

When Survival Mode Becomes Everyday Life

Trauma responses are not always obvious. For some people, survival mode can look like emotional shutdown, people-pleasing, hyper-independence, burnout, anxiety, irritability, avoidance, memory difficulties or feeling constantly overwhelmed. Neurodivergent people may also spend years masking, overthinking or pushing themselves beyond exhaustion just to appear like they are coping. Over time, living in a constant state of stress can affect confidence, relationships, emotional wellbeing and the ability to feel safe or regulated

Rebuilding Stability

Support That Understands Overwhelm

Support should take emotional overwhelm, burnout, masking and nervous system exhaustion into account rather than treating people like they are failing or “not coping properly.” Some people may need support rebuilding routines, managing emotions, understanding their needs, setting boundaries or breaking overwhelming situations into manageable steps without shame or judgement
