Safety Planning

Safety planning is about thinking ahead in a calm, practical way so that you can feel more prepared, supported and in control if things become difficult

Why It Matters

Safety Planning Is About Feeling Prepared, Not Panicked

Trauma is not just about what happened. It is about how the mind and body respond to what happened. Even when a difficult situation has ended, the nervous system may continue to react as though danger is still present. This can affect emotions, relationships, confidence, concentration and the ability to feel safe or regulated.
Many trauma responses are normal survival mechanisms. They developed to protect you during difficult experiences, even if they now feel exhausting or overwhelming.

KEY CONSIDERATIONS

Areas To Think About

A safety plan does not need to cover everything at once. These are some of the key areas many people find helpful to think about

Emotional Safety

Identifying the people, places and activities that help you feel calm, supported and grounded during difficult times

Practical Safety

Thinking about important documents, finances, transport, medication and other essentials you may need access to if circumstances change

Digital Safety

Protecting your passwords, devices, social media accounts and personal information to help maintain privacy and reduce unwanted contact.

Family & Support Networks

Considering the needs of children, trusted adults, schools, friends and other support systems that may be part of your safety plan.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Your Safety Plan Should Work For You

A safety plan should feel practical, realistic and tailored to your circumstances. It does not need to be perfect or cover every possible situation. Even small steps can help you feel more prepared and more in control.Your needs, circumstances and support networks may change over time, so your safety plan can change too. The most important thing is creating a plan that feels manageable and works for you.
